No one from the mayor’s office or the City Council has spoken out against this blatant disregard of existing public policy. It’s “public employee misconduct” and under the mission statement of San Jose’s Open Government Committee, transparency and accountability are “ensured.” City Counc...Attorney apologizes after calling Bob Lee 'the Walgreens of recreational drugs'

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The lead defense attorney for Bob Lee's accused killer apologized to the tech mogul's family Thursday after describing Lee as "the Walgreens of recreational drugs." Prosecutors said Lee spent hours hanging out with friends in luxury apartments and hotel rooms before he was brutally stabbed and left to die alone in a San Francisco street on April 4. The 43-year-old Cash App founder is survived by his ex-wife, two daughters, father, and brother. Nima Momeni was charged with murder. Momeni's defense attorney, Paula Canny, wrote an apology on Thursday stating, "I apologize for my remarks to the press following Tuesday's court appearance, especially to Bob Lee's family, friends, and loved ones. I regret that I characterized the autopsy toxicology screen in such an insensitive and cavalier way. I was out of line and wrong. I am sorry."Paula Canny, attorney for Nima Momeni, speaks to reporters Tuesday, May 2, 2023, after her client's arraignment was postponed. (AP P...UC Davis stabbing suspect has Bay Area roots

Former UC Davis student Carlos Dominguez, 21, was formally arrested on Thursday and is believed to have ties to the Bay Area. In a press conference Thursday, the Davis Police Department said Dominguez is believed to be from Oakland. UC Davis also confirmed to KRON4 that he attended Laney College in Oakland before UC Davis. Ex-UC Davis student arrested as suspect in stabbings, believed to be from Oakland Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said Dominguez was initially detained as a person of interest after 15 people called to report someone wearing the same clothes as the suspect description. Police claim he had a large hunting knife in his backpack. The blade appears to be consistent with the first stabbing, per police, but it has not been confirmed to be the knife used in the attacks. NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) — A worker was killed Thursday after a powerful explosion tore through a pharmaceutical chemical plant in Massachusetts, ripping the roof off the building and prompting a U.S. senator to demand accountability from the plant’s owners.Acting Newburyport Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury did not publicly identify the person who died, but said crews recovered the body from the building. Initially, the search was hampered by concern about the plant’s structural integrity following the blast that sent flames leaping high above the building and scattering industrial debris nearby.Bradbury described the blast as a “seven-alarm hazardous materials” event.Four other workers were sent to the hospital as a precaution, but were uninjured and released. The explosion prompted U.S. Sen. Edward Markey to demand greater accountability from the troubled facility.Authorities said there was no threat to the local population or to homes near the Newburyport building, but fire...Millions pledged for oil transfer from tanker off Yemen

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Donors pledged an additional $5.6 million Thursday that will enable the United Nations to start transferring more than 1 million barrels of crude oil from a rusting tanker off the coast of war-torn Yemen that poses a major environmental threat, but the U.N. said nearly $24 million is still needed to offload all the oil. A large vessel called the Nautica, which was purchased by the U.N. Development Program in March to take on the oil from the FSO Safer, is expected to arrive in the region in the coming days and the transfer operation is expected to start before the end of the month, U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said. The UNDP said Egypt, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, South Korea, the United Kingdom and private company Octavia Energy and its subsidiary Calvalley Petroleum announced pledges totaling almost $8 million, of which $5.6 million represents new funding. With the new pledges, the U.N. has now raised $105.2 million for the operation to remove...House members debate drastically changed land-use bill

DENVER (KDVR) — The fates of many of the controversial bills from this year's Colorado legislative session were decided before this final week, with the session to end on May 8.A major piece of legislation that changed yet again during the final week is the land use bill. It is a proposal the governor rolled out in March that had cities speaking out against it in the name of local control. Senators removed zoning requirements originally proposed in hopes of easing concerns about local control, but House members made a move to put some of those provisions back into the bill. Bill would raise prosecution age from 10 years old "Friends, Colorado has a problem when it comes to housing. We do not have enough of it, and this isn't just a problem in my district but it's a problem in all of my colleagues' districts across the General Assembly," bill sponsor Rep. Iman Jodeh, D-Aurora, said at a news conference announcing the changes on Tuesday.Everyone seems to agree on the issue: Colorado...Latest news
