The 2023 Red Sox: By the numbers

Baseball is a numbers game. It has always been a numbers game.Number of games played, homers hit, runs driven in, strikeouts, walks. Wins and losses. Averages and percentages. Single-season and career statistics. Record highs and personal worsts. That’s not even getting into the advanced metrics of the modern era.One stat alone won’t tell the full story. In 2023, the Red Sox finished 78-84, in last place for the third time in four seasons. But their record belies how great they were at times, on both individual and collective levels. To truly understand this team, why they flourished, faltered, and how they ultimately failed, one must examine the numbers behind the numbers. So, one last time before the calendar page mercifully flips to a new year and clean slate, here are the 2023 Red Sox by the numbers:Record and recordsHere’s an odd bit of trivia: this was the ninth season in which the Red Sox won exactly 78 games, but only the sixth time they also finished with exactly 84 losses. Even at a power football program like BB&N, every now and then, someone as young as an eighth grader can make an impact. The current example of this is strong safety and running back Owen DeSalvo. After the end of the season, DeSalvo represented Massachusetts at the FBU National Championships in Naples, Fla., and was named a finalist for National Eighth Grade Player of the Year. He also earned an invite to the FBU/Adidas Freshman All-American Game. This is all coming off a terrific season with the Knights. He started all nine games on defense, where he was third on the team in tackles, and earned an offer from UMass. It is quite the early resume for the Cohasset native, who is excited to take those next steps as a player.“Before coming to BB&N, I was mainly getting plays at running back and on the offensive side of the ball,” DeSalvo said. “After coming to BB&N this year, I switched to the defensive side of the ball at strong safety. I think over time one o...Large waves damage Ocean Beach Pier

SAN DIEGO -- The Ocean Beach Pier is damaged after getting hit hard this weekend during the high surf warning in San Diego County. The pier closed in October as a safety precaution and will remain closed through early 2024 because of previous damage. Large waves eight to 12 feet, with sets up to 18 feet, have been pounding the Southern California coastline this weekend, causing even more damage to the 57-year-old pier. The pier has been closed several times in recent years. Over the past five years, the City of San Diego says it has spent $1.7 million to repair the Ocean Beach Pier, which has been closed to the public about 30% of that time due to damage. Coastal closures in place amid high surf warning in San Diego County “The cycle of damage and repairs for the Ocean Beach Pier has been an increasing challenge in recent years – and one that we cannot prevent,” said City Engineer Rania Amen, Director of the Engineering and Capital Projects Department. “Our teams wi...What's closed New Year's Day in San Diego County?

BANGKOK (AP) — A survey of factory managers in China shows manufacturing contracted in December in the latest sign the world’s second-largest economy remains sluggish. The official purchasing managers index, or PMI, fell to 49 last month in what officials said was evidence of weak demand, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on Sunday. It was the third straight month of contraction. The PMI is on a scale up to 100 where 50 marks the cutoff between expansion and contraction. The index has fallen in eight of the past nine months, with an increase only in September. In November, the index was at 49.4, down from 49.5 the month before. Despite unexpectedly prolonged weakness after the pandemic, China’s economy grew at a 5.2% pace in the first three quarters of the year and showed signs of improvement in November, with factory output and retail sales rising. In recent months, the government has raised spending on construction of ports and other infrastructure, cut interest rates and ...North Korea’s Kim says military should ‘thoroughly annihilate’ US, South Korea if provoked

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to put the Green Bay Packers in control of a spot in the playoffs with a 33-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.Aaron Jones rushed for 120 yards and Jayden Reed had two touchdown catches for the Packers (8-8), who can get the NFC’s last wild-card spot by beating Chicago at home next week. Seattle’s loss earlier in the day allowed them to climb above the cut.Love went 24 for 33 for 256 yards in what was surely the finest game of his first year as the starter in the post-Aaron Rodgers era. “He’s playing at an incredibly high level. I’m super happy for him, because he’s put in a ton of work to get to this point,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “I really think the sky is the limit for us. He’s just showing a glimpse of what he can ultimately be.”Last season, Rodgers and the Packers lost a win-and-in finale at home to Detroit and missed the playoffs.“It’s an awesome vibe in the...Latest news
