By HOWARD FENDRICH (AP Tennis Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — There was not much drama involved in Frances Tiafoe’s second-round victory at the U.S. Open on Wednesday night. This is where he wants to be, no matter the details of the match. Under the lights at a Grand Slam tournament, absorbing the attention of thousands of folks in the Arthur Ashe Stadium stands and reciprocating the love while getting past Sebastian Ofner of Austria 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in a tad more than 1 1/2 hours.“I love it. Colorado TABOR refunds at risk? New IRS guidance again muddies their tax status

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 12:31:08 GMT

The Internal Revenue Service has again raised the possibility that some taxpayers will need to report Colorado’s state tax refunds as income on their federal returns — and that money could be taxed.Colorado officials are still sussing out what the new guidance, issued Wednesday, will mean for taxpayers who receive refunds of excessive tax collections through the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR. Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 12:31:08 GMT

Nearly two weeks after a woman was senselessly killed over a Pride flag hanging outside of her shop, some San Bernardino Mountain communities are showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community by flying the flag outside other businesses and even some residences. After making disparaging remarks about the Pride flag outside her store, Mag Pi, on Aug. 18, officials say Travis Ikeguchi, 27, a Cedar Glen resident, shot and killed 66-year-old Laura Ann Carleton. After the shooting, authorities say Ikeguchi fled the scene on foot but was shot and killed by deputies following a confrontation. “Every time we see those flags, it feels like that’s a safe space,” Natalie Camunas, with Digital Mountaineers, told KTLA.  In mountain communities like Cedar Glen, Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs, you’ll now find more businesses and some homes decorated with the Pride flag as a show of solidarity and to rally together in the wake of the tragic killing.  At the gastropub Spade & Spatula, t...

Millions of moon lovers worldwide are watching the skies as the “full super blue moon” rises Wednesday night where they are. And the D.C. area is no exception, that is, of course, if the weather cooperates. As the saying goes, it happens once in a blue moon, and the last time there was a full super blue moon was in 2018. There will not be another event like this until Jan. 31, 2037, which will also be a blood moon — a total lunar eclipse. The moon rose in the east at 7:54 p.m. But it will be at its brightest and largest as the supermoon and officially the blue moon at 9:36 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.It so happens that this full moon is also the closest full moon to Earth in 2023. That equates to it being the largest and brightest full moon for the entire year. Tides associated with this event will be larger as well, which could add to the effects of Idalia. As for your viewing prospects in the D.C. region, clouds are present but it is still worth looking during the night to...
