OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Meta is temporarily blocking some Canadian users from accessing news content on Facebook and Instagram as part of a temporary test that is expected to last through the end of June, the tech giant said Thursday. The block — which follows a similar step taken by Google earlier this year — comes in response to a proposed bill that will require tech giants to pay publishers for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online. Bill C-18, the Online News Act, is currently being considered in the Senate and could be passed as early as this month.Meta also said it is prepared to permanently block news content on Facebook and Instagram for Canadians if the bill passes.Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez called Meta’s move “disappointing” and said Canadians will not be intimidated by these tactics. The temporary block announced Thursday will affect one to 5% of its 24 million Canadian users, with the number of those impacted fluctuating throughout th...

Erdogan, who has led Turkey as prime minister or president for 20 years, prevailed in a runoff race last weekend despite the country’s ongoing economic crisis and his government’s criticized response to a February earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people.Known as “reis,” or “the chief,” among his fans, the 69-year-old Erdogan already is the longest-serving leader in the Turkish republic’s history. His reelection to a five-year term that runs until 2028 extends his rule into a third decade, and he could possibly serve longer with the help of a friendly parliament. Here is a look at Erdogan’s career and some of the reasons for his political longevity.IT’S NOT THE ECONOMY Many experts agree that Turkey’s severe econ...

Watermain break prompts boil water advisory for three Calgary communities

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:50:21 GMT

CALGARY — Alberta Health Services has ordered Calgary to issue a boil water advisory for three communities, effective immediately. The advisory applies to Silverado, Yorkville and Belmont until further notice.A watermain break Thursday afternoon disrupted water supply to a large portion of those communities, and while water has been restored to most homes, the city says the advisory has been issued out of an abundance of caution. All residents and businesses within the affected area are instructed to bring all tap water to a rolling boil for one full minute prior to any consumption, including brushing teeth, making ice, cleaning raw foods, drinking and making baby formula.Water used for bathing or for laundry does not need to be boiled. The city says it is working closely with the Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and Alberta Health Services to resolve the water quality concerns. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 2, 2023.The Canadian Press

Spanish police raided three clandestine tobacco factories earlier this year, seizing nearly €40 million worth of tobacco leaf and illicit cigarettes. At one, in the northern town of Alfaro, they found 10 Ukrainian workers, five of them war refugees, who'd been put to work with no contracts and scant pay, police said.
