Local cycling store on brink of shutting down after robbery  A family-owned business in L.A. County is reeling from a robbery that has left them close to shutting their doors for good. Irwindale Cycles on Arrow Highway had nearly $40,000 worth of bikes and inventory stolen from them during a break-in last week, according to a GoFundMe set up to help the business recoup some of their losses. “This isn’t a corporation or franchise owned store; this is a family who has tirelessly spent years creating and supporting the cycling community we have come to know today in the San Gabriels,” the GoFundMe said. “This kind of loss to a family-owned shop is devastating...but even worse would be the loss of their store in the next few months.” A woman was able to take two pictures of the alleged robbers on a train before they exited in Pasadena. (GoFundMe)A woman was able to take two pictures of the alleged robbers on a train before they exited in Pasadena. (GoFundMe)Irwindale Cycles as seen in an undated photo. Rory McIlroy moves into contention at Irish Open, 2 shots behind leader Hurly Long STRAFFAN, Ireland (AP) — Rory McIlroy birdied his last two holes to move into contention for a second Irish Open title as most of the players in front of him faltered in the third round on Saturday. McIlroy finished off a 6-under 66 with a short birdie putt on the 18th to push into third place, two shots behind leader Hurly Long of Germany. That’s a better spot than he had expected, given that he started the day eight shots off the lead.“I felt like I maybe needed to go a couple lower to get myself right in it,” 2016 winner McIlroy said while more than a dozen players were still on the course. “But the guys at the top haven’t really went away from the field that much today.” And they didn’t get anything going on the back nine at The K Club, either. Long needed a birdie on the last hole to restore a two-shot advantage over McIlroy after a 70 gave him a 13-under total of 203. Jordan Smith, who held a share of the overnight lead with Shubhankar Sharma, then also birdied the...

Howie Carr: You have choices to vote out the clown show, er, Boston City Council

Published Sun, 29 Dec 2024 12:05:08 GMT

Howie Carr: You have choices to vote out the clown show, er, Boston City Council Casting a ballot in a Boston City Council election is usually about as meaningful as picking up your cellphone and dialing in a vote for your favorite D-list celebrity on Dancing with the Stars. But this Tuesday, going to the polls could be important, because it might help determine who becomes mayor next year if (or when) Michelle Wu decides to move on.Rumors are rampant that two years after her election, the 37-year-old drifter from Chicago is “despondent” over the job, as well she should be, as abysmally as she’s performed her duties.Last week, Wu was asked by reporters if she’s been talking to Harvard about a job. She denied it, sort of.Maybe they should have asked her about MIT. That’s the other rumor. If Wu resigns, she would be replaced by the president of that third-rate clown-show known as the City Council. The current president is Ed Flynn, son of former mayor Ray Flynn. Not a bad guy, but Ed’s never been on the short list for Mensa. When a riot breaks out at a Council meetin...

Trump, DeSantis and other 2024 GOP prospects vie for attention at the Iowa-Iowa State football game

Trump, DeSantis and other 2024 GOP prospects vie for attention at the Iowa-Iowa State football game DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump will cross paths with several Republican rivals Saturday when he attends Iowa’s in-state college football grudge match, one of the former president’s few visits so far to the state that holds the first nominating caucus next year. Trump will wade into one of the state’s largest sports crowds at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, where Iowa State will host Iowa. Also planning to be at the game are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and several lesser-known candidates. With the race entering its traditional ramp-up after Labor Day, Trump has largely skipped holding town halls or participating in many of the state’s cherished campaign traditions, but has not paid a price so far. Trump remains far ahead of DeSantis and other rivals in Iowa and nationally. Trump has made a habit of visiting Iowa on the same day as DeSantis, whom Trump treats as his main threat. Both are expected to be in and around the stadium before kickoff, reminiscent of the...

Canadian forecasters watching point where hurricane Lee turns and journeys northwards

Published Sun, 29 Dec 2024 12:05:08 GMT

Canadian forecasters watching point where hurricane Lee turns and journeys northwards HALIFAX — Atlantic Canadians will learn more about the track of hurricane Lee later this week, after it becomes clear where the powerful storm will begin its journey northwards.Environment Canada meteorologist Bob Robichaud says the hurricane will be felt in Atlantic Canada by next weekend, but the question remains how close it will come to shore. He says the point where Lee, currently in the northeastern Caribbean, twists to the north could affect whether it results in higher waves along the East Coast, or severe rain and wind that comes onshore.Robichaud says that turn is expected by Tuesday or Wednesday. He says the other key factor will be how far east a high pressure zone over the Great Lakes will move, as this system might help push the hurricane further off the Canadian coast. Robichaud says another issue will be water temperatures in the storm’s pathway, which could allow Lee to gather momentum or blunt the storm’s impact, if temperatures are low. This report by The...
