No sweep for Rockies as bullpen implodes in loss to White Sox

To shamelessly steal a phrase from Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi: “No sweep for you!”Sunday afternoon, the Rockies were on track for just their second three-game sweep of the season. They led the White Sox, 5-3, entering the eighth inning at Coors Field. Then, “yada, yada, yada,” it all fell apart.Chicago teed off on relievers Matt Koch, Justin Bruihl and Justin Lawrence in a seven-run inning to pocket a 10-5 win.Koch gave up four runs on three hits and a walk. Bruihl, a left-hander, came in and intentionally walked Yasmani Grandal to load the bases so that he could face lefty Oscar Colas. The strategy backfired when Colas hit a two-run double to left. The back-breaker was Lenly Sosa’s three-run homer to left off of Lawrence’s first-pitch sweeper. Lawrence has not been sharp lately. He allowed a career-high five runs last Tuesday in the ninth inning, his eighth blown save of the season in an 8-5 loss to Arizona at Coors. The Rockies were seeking their ...After being eliminated from AL West, how do the Oakland A’s find purpose in a losing season?

OAKLAND — The fan experience has been stripped to its bare bones at the Oakland Coliseum, but having a kid announce one inning over the PA system is one of a few traditions that remains. In the fifth inning of the Oakland A’s 12-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the lucky kid at the microphone added a little flair to one of his announcements.“Up next, my favorite player,” the kid said over the Coliseum’s sound system. “Tony Kemp.”Kemp looked up toward the announcer’s booth on his way to the batter’s box, tipped his helmet and waved at the kid. Cameras caught the kid waving back, a huge grin on his face. During the dog days of a season destined to fail from its start, veterans such as Kemp can syphon purpose through interactions like that one.The big picture is far too bleak. With the loss, the A’s were officially eliminated from American League West contention. On Aug. 20, it’s the earliest in the season in franchise hi...Adobe co-founder John Warnock, a giant in the tech world, dies at 82

Adobe co-founder John Warnock, one of the titans of the Silicon Valley tech industry, has died at the age of 82.“It is with profound sadness that Adobe shares the passing of the company’s beloved co-founder Dr. John Warnock,” Adobe announced in a news release. “Dr. Warnock passed away on Saturday surrounded by his family.”No cause of death was mentioned.Warnock will be remembered for co-founding Photoshop maker Adobe in 1982 with Charles Geschke. In a classic Silicon Valley tale, the two visionaries, who had first met while working at Xerox, reportedly started the company in the garage of Warnock’s home in Los Altos. (As the story goes, the company’s name came from the Adobe Creek that ran behind the house.) Before the year was out, they were fending off a takeover bid from Apple’s Steve Jobs. The company’s first product was Adobe PostScript, which helped spawn the desktop publishing revolution.Under Warnock’s watch, Adobe grew to...49ers’ Brock Purdy checks out healthy after nerve-wracking scramble in cameo

SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy scampered into Levi’s Stadium’s open field, cut back inside, and, with his competitive juices in regular-season mode, sought out the goal line.He didn’t make it into the end zone.He emerged unscathed, however, from that 8-yard scramble to the 2-yard line, which capped his nine-snap cameo in Saturday night’s 21-20 preseason win over Denver. It was Purdy’s first game since tearing an elbow ligament in last season’s NFC Championship loss.“Once he cut back inside, I was just begging for him to get down,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday on a media conference call.San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) looks to pass against the Denver Broncos in the first quarter of a NFL preseason game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023. As Tropical Storm Hilary bears down on Southern California, a series of earthquakes have complicated the picture further — with the first, a magnitude 5.1 quake, hitting just southeast of Ojai around 2:45 p.m.More than a dozen aftershocks followed suit, ranging from 2.5 to 3.8 on the Richter scale. Both the Ventura County Sheriff and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass reported that there were no immediate reports of damage. Still, the quakes’ impacts rippled from Ventura to Los Angeles to Kern counties, according to U.S. Geological Survey tool that allows individuals to report their experiences. One Ventura-based individual reported that he felt over a minute’s worth of rolling; another in Sherman Oaks said they felt a big jostle followed by long, wobbly rolls.“The hurricane wasn’t enough. We just got hit with an earthquake too,” tweeted Markeia McCarty, a Los Angeles-based actress. “Remember us after we break off into ocean.”Dr. Lucy Jones, ...2 dead, 1 injured after three Oakland shootings Sunday morning
